Frequently Asked questions.

What will the weather be like?

We target our tours to experience the best weather for the countries we visit.
The reality though is that it is easier to guess at this than forecast exchange
rate. Regardless of the trip it pays to have some wet weather gear on board as
previously we have had to use them on one or two occasions. We are more
than likely to encounter fog riding up the US coast than any of our other
destinations and you can get mixed weather when riding in the hills in any
country, e.g. the Rockies in the US and the Alps in NZ.
Best to bring or hire similar gear as one would use at home.
In South Dakota, Utah, and Arizona you’re very likely to get spectacular
thunder storms most afternoons. Generally short lived and it makes sense to
sit them out under shelter rather than riding with the chance of getting zapped
by a lightning bolt or pelted by hail stones.
Wherever you ride you are sure to get a variety of riding conditions. As the
Boy Scouts say, “always be prepared”.

bike servicing?

Trips up to 4 weeks generally do not require a service.
Longer rides of 6-7 weeks will require an oil change and filter after 4-5 weeks. Depending on thecondition of the tires at the start and the way you ride this may be an additional consideration.

How do we know where we are going?

We have put together a detailed tour booklet and a suggested Itinerary.
Over the years we have scoured the areas to find the best places for you to visit and we talk to a lot of local bikers. We tweak the itinerary from our experiencers to keep improving as we find local routes and off the map sights.

What will the accommodation

be like?

The Motels and Hotels we stay at we have used for many years. We have secured good rates that when friends tour they ahave said they can’t match ours. Some will have a pool, a few offer a complimentary breakfast, secure parking is an essential and we like to have an easy stroll to bars and restaurants. We don’t target the cheaper chains as we wish to provide an awesome experience. In some of the small towns the options are limited but this is made up by the hospitality provided and  additional options provided.
Can I share?
Individuals that choose Share Twin rates will have twin King Single or Queen Beds in the same room. Some couples wish to share with friends. We recommend this is done at the larger facilities where two bedroom suits and apartments are available, most have a shared bathroom. If you wish to share majority of nights we advise that every third or fourth night that each couple have own room as not all motels-hotels will have separate sleeping areas and it gives some time out benefits.

Is there a backup support vehicle?

The simple answer is yes.
In the USA this is a large van capable of accommodating a couple of bikes if needed. In New Zealand and Europe it is a small van or Station wagon for bags and passenger support.

This means you only need to carry on your bike your daily necessities, wet weather gear, something to change into if you arrive at the hotel before your bags and sunscreen etc.
The Vehicle acts as a tail end Charlie and will carry, besides a range of repair parts and medical kit, it also will carry one supplied bag per person and a huge Chilly Bin that the driver will fill each afternoon with lovely cold beers and a couple of wines for the ladies for our daily ride debrief. Should a medical situation arise the vehicle also helps to provide carriage of the individual.

How much should I budget for?

For day to day costs, a couple should budget $NZ 120.00 a day for meals and gas. We have a chilly bin in the van and beers cost $2.00, wines $20.00 per bottle. That really assists the budget, and no tipping needed on this in the USA.

Is Motorbike insurance provided for?

Comprehensive, Third Party and under-insured motorist is included in Policy. There are conditions to Insurance cover provided that apply. An application is needed to be completed.

insurance while riding a rental?

Cover for damage to hire bikes are available at some locations and have options for up to $300,000.00 for Liability Coverage. Also included is Roadside assistance and Tire puncture repair including towing.

Can I ship home any items?

You can ship items with your motor bike in it’s crate or items can be posted back while on the tours.

When shipping from Wellington, we will supply fully contained Harley Davidson crates on a rigid metal base. Once your bike is un-crated, the crates are stored and you can leave personal effects not needed on the tour.

When returning to New Zealand options are available to ship your bike to either Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin.

How do we ride?

Ride to enjoy, at your own pace, in your comfort zone. The emphasis is to have fun and be safe.

The night before we will have talked about the next day’s ride, the roads conditions expected and places of interest to stop at enroute. Your tour book has a daily ride map and suggested stops.

We start out as a group but since you have the option of deciding your movements, we often break into smaller groups. At the end of the day we often arrive at the Motel about the same time. This gives us an opportunity to get the gear off have a cold beer or chilled wine while we debrief from the day and your experiences while discussing the next day’s ride. If you thought today was great, wait till tomorrow.

You have the option of leaving the group if you’re wanting to visit friends off our route and we will assist in making accommodation elsewhere until you rejoin group.
